A Heartfelt Message to Our Valued Parents

The first and foremost thing that every parent needs to do is accept the child's disability without weighing heavily on one's mind. Understanding the child is important. Every child is different and unique; they grow according to their wishes. The fact that every parent and family member needs to agree and receive is that "special needs is not a disease to get cured, it's a disorder.". This means that the intensity or severity of the condition can be reduced but cannot be uprooted. We can help the child to improve by providing various therapies like occupational therapy, behavior modification, sensory integration, speech and language development, special education, yoga, music, play therapy, physiotherapy, etc. according to the child's requirements. With these therapies, the child will definitely take steps forward and make progress slowly and steadily.

Parents and family members get inquisitive about why a child needs to attend a special school and why not a mainstream school. The reason behind this is that children cannot adapt or adjust in a mainstream school. One more difference is that the teachers in a regular school will teach from the text books and follow the syllabus, which a child who is differently abled cannot string along with that pase. The child is not ready for that. Instead of teaching a child at the grade level, teaching the child at his/her level using various techniques and IEP will help the child understand better and will surely incline up. IEP (Individualized Educational Plan) is a creative way of teaching a child with respect to the child's level, i.e., according to the potential of the child.

Identifying the child's strengths and interests and motivating the child plays a major role in their improvement. Every child has a special interest like art and crafts, music, dance, sports, etc. Training them in that stream and encouraging them will make their future bright.

As far as now, there is no cure for any of the special needs or neurological disorders.

However, early intervention [3–7 7yrs] can improve a child's development and help them learn important skills. Checking developmental red flags and screening tests plays a vital role in identifying the disorder, and addressing them with the necessary therapies will surely improve the child.
